Capital Transit seeks fare increase

Farebox rates for adults could move to $2, youth fares unaffected

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly Finance Committee approved a request to increase farebox rates for adults riding Capital Transit buses to $2.

Currently, the adult fare is $1.50.

If approved by the full Assembly, the fares would go into effect July 2.

“It’s a 20 percent increase in some fares and zero increase in others,” Kirk Duncan, city public works director, said. Fares for passengers aged 6 – 18, will not go up, he said.

“(It’s) not something we want to do, it is an economic reality,” Duncan said.

Duncan said Capital Transit last increased it’s fares by 25 cents in 2004.

Assembly Member Mary Becker asked about the effects of the increase.

“The ones who ride your busses now, is it going to be a serious increase?” she asked.

While an across-the board-increase was considered, Duncan said his department took “a more community friendly approach,” he said.

“If there is any discretionary income it is in that adult fare box.”

Bus passes and tokens will reflect the increase as well. A roll of 20 tokens would increase from $24 to $30 and monthly passes for adults would increase from $36 to $40, according to an Assembly handout.

The increase in adult fare has the added benefit of bringing tourism dollars to Capital Transit’s coffers, Duncan said.

Ridership increases almost 20 percent in June, July and August, Duncan said.

The fare increase is meant to offset cuts to Capital Transit’s budget, Duncan said. Rather than cut service, he said, the city decided to increase revenue.

The fare increase is expected to bring about $155,000 in additional revenues in fiscal year 2013.

With no objections, the Finance committee moved the fare increase to the full Assembly.
