Photo: A trip through time

Capt. John George of the Juneau Steamboat Co. gives a tour Friday to third-graders from Glacier Valley Elementary School of Susanna, his wood-fired steamboat that is reminiscent of the steamboats used to transfer miners across Gastineau Channel from the 1880s to the 1930s. The students have been studying Juneau's mining history and spent Friday morning exploring the Treadwell mining complex before touring the steamboat. Friday's high winds did not allow for a trip away from the dock.
