Yoel Guillen Canpos and his wife, Michele Dyer have opened People's Place featuring Cuban and American food to go from a trailer in Lemon Creek.

Yoel Guillen Campos serves up huge dishes of steaming pork shoulder, brisket, black bean and rice at his Cuban American food cart near the Bobcat brand skid-loader dealership in Lemon Creek.

And all of Guillen Campos' Cuban plates come with a side of plantains. Fried plantains, cut into small lightly browned chunks. The outside is crispy and salty and the insides are like slightly sweet pudding. Not feeling adventurous? People's Place also serves good ol' American French fries.

Guillen Campos honed his American menu working the last several years at the Hangar on the Warf. His Cuban menu comes straight from family recipes he brought from Cuba.

Savory and spicy and vast, the No. 4 Friscase De Puerco is pork shoulder with black beans and rice, salad, plantains and plenty of hot sauce for $9.50. If one plans to eat the whole thing, be prepared to exclaim disbelief at the accomplishment of said task.

People’s Place is open Monday through Saturday fom 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Press lottery?

Is there some lottery to enter for a decent local restaurant to receive positive press like this with color photos included? Are advertising dollars required to receive a fluff piece in this publication? Or is it just rotation? I have visited this establishment and agree that it's unique fare is buzz worthy but I have trouble deciphering why and how a business earns this press. I know of several locally owned establishments that offer fantastic food service that are overlooked.

Just because it has the word "Cuban" in it....

Does not necessarily mean it is authentic "Cuban" food. Read the history of the sandwich itself.... It's named for the type of bread used....not the country of origin (although opinions differ). French Dip is not necessarily "French" - and you certainly wouldn't find it on a French restaurant's menu simply because it has the word "French" in it - it's named for the type of bread typically used to make it.

Try real Cuban food....it's delicious, flavorful and filling. Don't slam a small business because of misconceptions....

tonight's the night.....

I've been driving by this place for a couple of weeks, and have heard from several people that it's good. I was wondering what would be for dinner to night - I believe the #4 will do just fine!

Press Lottery

How do you get front page coverage in this town? Simply open a business. A new businness is newswothy in Juneau especially for somewhere to eat.

And Tampa and Cuban sandwiches are on the menu at any Cuban Restaurant you go to. White Castle burgers don't come from white castles.

A Cuban restaurant without Cuban sandwiches is like a pizzeria without pizza.

Had #4 for lunch

Quite good - tasty, filling and friendly service. Hot sauce is flavorful and the plantains - yum! Definitely will go back again.

Congratulations

Nice to see a new place to eat in this town. I think we'll give it a try in the next couple of days. Reasonably priced, good service and good food, something new for Juneau! Good luck to the owners!

hug-em, did you think?

....to nicely ask the proprietor if he might consider making a cuban sandwich?

Who knows the reason - it's a tiny space, he's just getting started, you never know what people are going to like - - maybe a cuban sandwich has some ingredient that's hard to deal with, or doesn't match up with the rest of the dishes, etc. etc.

Mama always said - you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar (although, fly reference not quite the thing for a food article, but you get the point).

Cuban Sandwich

If you have ever been to Cuba you would know the truth about a "real" cuban sandwich.

Been to Cuba and this food is authentic, in fact, it's even bumped up a notch.

Felicitaciones! Buena Suerte!!
