JPD: Boat operator of unmanned skiff presumed missing at sea

Police say the man who was operating a skiff that was found unmanned with the engine running Thursday is presumed missing at sea.

Police identified the man as 65-year-old Juneau resident Glen Charles “Chuck” Craig, according to a police statement.

Foul play is not suspected, and the family has been notified, Lt. David Campbell of the Juneau Police Department said in a release Friday.

The Coast Guard launched a search for possible occupants of the skiff Thursday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. after another boater reported finding the unmanned 16-foot skiff in Favorite Channel in the area of the Shrine of St Therese.

Officials said the search was halted around 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

Police said Craig’s body was not found.

Police identified Craig by the operator’s license which was on board the skiff. The skiff was returned to his family.
