Report reveals statistics on how Juneau's visitors make their plans

Four out of five Juneau visitors plan their trips online, and half used the internet to book rooms, flights and tours, among other activities.

This information and much more can be found on the Alaska Visitors Statistics Program VI for the summer of 2011, prepared for the Alaska Department of Commerce Community & Economic Development by the McDowell Group.

The report splits the overall numbers into visitors who planed or booked their trips to by air, cruise line, road and state ferry. Ninety percent of visitors who drove or rode the ferry to Juneau planned their trip online. Sixty-six percent researched and booked their trips that way.

Over a third of all visitors to Juneau booked city and sightseeing tours, while 27 percent signed up for wildlife viewing. A full quarter visited cultural attractions and one in five booked a day cruise.

The visitors statistics program is designed to provide state government and the tourism industry information on out-of-state visitors. It tracks visitor volume — the number of out-of-state visitors departing Alaska — and includes a visitor survey to determine “trip purpose, transportation modes used, length of stay, destinations, lodging, activities, expenditures, satisfaction, trip planning and demographics,” according to the McDowell Group.

The report found 37 percent of road and ferry users who visited Juneau booked airfare online. While a portion of this, 19 percent, used air travel for in-state travel, the remainder “is likely due to those visitors who flew one-way and traveled by highway or ferry” into or out of Juneau.

A statistic that may interest an owner of a hotel, inn or bed and breakfast — while 63 percent of Juneau-only visitors booked their flights online, only 18 percent of those went on to book lodging online.
