Wreck briefly closes 1 lane of Douglas Highway on Sunday

Posted: May 22, 2012 - 12:01am

A crash involving two vehicles sent one person to the hospital and closed one lane of Douglas Highway on Sunday afternoon, according to a release from the Juneau Police Department.

Both vehicles were traveling in the southbound lane of Douglas Highway when the first — a 2004 Mazda driven by a 27-year-old person — stopped to make a left turn, the release states. The second vehicle — a 2007 Honda CRV driven by a 42-year-old woman — then hit the Mazda from behind.

An ambulance transported a passenger in the Mazda to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the release states.

The woman was cited for careless driving. The Mazda is believed to be a total loss, and the Honda sustained about $6,000 damage, the release states. JPD closed the southbound lane of the Douglas Highway for about 45 minute to investigate the crash.

Don't you think...

They would have said if they cited the driver if they were using a cellphone while driving?
Is it so hard to believe that the car that got hit just stopped suddenly to make a left hand turn off the main road, causing the accident to happen?

...or that the driver who was

...or that the driver

who was cited for careless driving

was following too closely, or didn't notice the forward car waiting to turn?

@ ak32

And if the driver was using a cell phone, what exactly would she have been cited for? Talking on a cell isn't illegal - only texting is.

So if she was distracted while talking on her cell, she would have been cited for careless driving...which she was.

Maybe no cell was involved, but after being involved in three near-misses in the past week, all by cell users, all clearly their fault, I'm starting to get paranoid.

Tail Lights?

Could it just be that the person turning left didn't use their turn signal?? People drive like they're the only ones on the road and don't need to let other drivers know what their intentions are on the road. It isn't always about a cell phone...
