UAS appoints two top leaders

Posted: May 31, 2012 - 12:10am

The University of Alaska Southeast has named two at the school to top leadership posts, including a dean and a new vice chancellor.

Both of those named to the new positions were already at the school.

Joe Nelson, now dean of enrollment management, has been named vice chancellor of enrollment management, by Chancellor John Pugh Wednesday. His new position begins Sunday.

In his new position, Nelson will be responsible for developing and implementing a student recruitment and retention plan as well as overseeing administrative units such as Admissions, Records and Financial Aid.

He is already a member of Pugh’s executive cabinet and is responsible for student services and enrollment management.

Nelson will provide leadership in the planning and budget process to improve and develop student and campus support services, the school stated in a release.

Nelson will also be responsible for integrating student services functions with academic programs and for directing the regional enrollment management plan.

Nelson has been at UAS since 2004, serving first as program director for the Preparing Indigenous Teachers and Administrators for Alaska Schools program, as an associate vice provost.

“Joe has done an outstanding job in all these positions,” Pugh stated in a press release announcing the appointment. “He has particularly provided leadership for our student success efforts.”

Nelson holds a law degree from the Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, along with a master’s degree in American Indian studies and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California at Los Angeles. He is on the boards of directors of Sealaska Corp. and for his village corporation in Yakutat.

Also named to a new position effective Sunday was John Blanchard, who will be the new UAS School of Management’s new dean. Provost Rick Caulfield made the appointment.

Blanchard has been a faculty member since January 2011, and took over as interim dean in July 2011.

The school said Blanchard was most recently president of All God’s Children International of Portland, Ore., an international adoption service provider. Prior to that he was director of operations for the Nature Conservancy of Oregon, vice president and chief financial officer for the Oregon State University Foundation and vice president for administrative services for Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore.

Blanchard holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Toledo and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Dayton. He is a certified public accountant and certified management accountant.

His new position as dean allows him to continue to teach accounting courses, Caulfield said.
