Dog attack prompts investigation

Posted: June 14, 2012 - 11:06pm

Officials say they are investigating an incident where a dog was shot with a handgun after it attacked three people near a business off Industrial Boulevard around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

No injuries were reported, and no one required medical care, Animal Control Officer Matthew Musslewhite said in a phone interview Thursday.

Musslewhite said the three individuals involved, whose names were not released, did not provoke the attack, which took place in the 10000 block of Camden Place.

“They had exited a vehicle when the dog charged and attacked,” Musslewhite said.

The dog ran off after being wounded with the gun, and police were called to assist in the search for the dog.

The search lasted under two hours, then was called off, Musslewhite said. Eventually, the dog found its way back to its owners at the business place. It was then treated by a vet.

“It’s alive right now and it’s back home with the owners,” Musslewhite said.

Musslewhite said he did not know if the dog, whose breed and name were withheld, actually bit anyone.

Musslewhite said he is still conducting interviews and the investigation is still ongoing. So far, no citations have been issued, he said.

Police could not be reached for comment.

The name of the business and the dog’s owners were not given.

Musslewhite said Animal Control responds to dog attacks on a regular basis.

“This one turned out better than it could have because nobody required hospitalization,” he said.

He said if the city decides to seek a court order to put down the dog, that would be unusual. But it depends on the circumstances of the attack, he said.

Musslewhite commented that so far as he knew the dog had never attacked anyone before.
