Jet ski accident leaves two teens injured Saturday

Posted: June 23, 2012 - 10:23pm  |  Updated: June 24, 2012 - 12:09am

Police say two 16-year-old girls were taken to the hospital after a jet skiing accident at Auke Lake Saturday afternoon.

Juneau Police Department Sgt. David Wrightson said police responded to the 911 call at about 4:22 p.m. along with Capital City Fire and Rescue crews.

The extent of the girls injuries was unknown, and no other details were available except that there were two jet skis involved.

Phone calls to Bartlett Regional Hospital went unreturned Saturday.

There...

There is more to come from this story. Very small lake, very easy to reach capacity. It only takes one speed boat with a water skier to fill the lake. Now we have a new boat launch and tons of traffic on the very very little lake.

Very sad event that took place here. I'm sorry for all involved. Now, get rid of the boat launch and make this a fishing, use your oars or a kicker lake. This shouldn't be a party lake. It's surrounded with homes and is very serene. If it were larger, I might feel otherwise. I just think there are far too many engines on this lake now.

If you disagree, wait until you hear about this tragedy in full before you reply.

Wren

You are so so right, I know the kids involved in this and it is a sad, unfortunate situation. Auke Lake needs to be a lake with no motorized vehicles, period. I hope they ban them immediately. The lake is just too small!

it's not that small of a lake

It's a pretty big lake. Unless it's still zoned out because of those houses by the lake.I think it's more carelessness then anything. I might agree if this happened more regularly. I'm sure there is more to the story. I hope the kids are okay.

I agree that having motorized

I agree that having motorized craft on Auke Lake is a recipe for disaster. On the few sunny and hot days like we had this last weekend, the lake gets filled up pretty fast. Nobody with a shred of common sense would believe that every soul on the lake is stone sober. A lot of the people out there are drunk or stoned, or both. Is it going to take a few fatalities before the powers that be come to their senses?

How May More Have to Die

Unpublished

This lake is way to small to have unlimited motorized use. Those politicians that ram rodded the anything goes on the lake were adament that safety was a high prority. The rules are totally disregarded and there is no enforcemant of them. You cant swim or float on a tube or raft in Auke lake with out fearing for your life. The drugs asnd booze are flaunted with impunity.

Really, a pretty big lake? Really??? Have you ever lived anywhere else that had lakes?

It is 160 acres. One square mile is 640 acres. That means it is 1/4 of one square mile. Yea, now that's a big lake.

If you are in a boat pulling a water skier, your wheel needs to be constantly turned so that you don't run up in the woods. Yep, big lake!

Tragedy

A young lady’s life was cut short in a tragic accident. I’m saddened to see people using this as an opportunity to complain about lake use and motorized vessels instead of expressing concern for the family’s loss.
