National Night Out to be held Aug. 7

The Juneau Police Department will be participating in the 29th annual National Night Out celebration to highlight crime and drug prevention awareness.

National Night Out’s “America’s Night Out Against Crime” takes place Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. It is traditionally celebrated by “lights on” and front porch vigils.

Police said in a statement that they hope Juneauites will additionally coordinate block parties, cookouts and neighborhood walk to partake in the event.

Police will be coordinating with the fire department and U.S. Coast Guard to visit various block parties and cookouts throughout the community.

For more information on how to host a cookout or block party in your neighborhood, and how to become registered as a Block Captain, call Officer John Cryderman at 586-0600. You can also fill at a form at the JPD station at 6255 Alaway Avenue, or register online at the JPD website,

National Night Out is sponsored by a nonprofit crime prevention group called the National Association of Town Watch. It formed National Night Out in 1984 to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
