Douglas parade, field events and more

The Douglas parade begins at 2 p.m. with assembly time at 1:30 p.m. at Gastineau Elementary School and proceeds down Third Street.

Pre-registration is not required and there is no fee.

At 2:30 p.m. field events will begin. Field events include three-legged and sack races.

The annual sandcastle challenge will be held. Bystanders can also view the usual hose race and the dog frisbee contest.

As usual, the fireworks event will take place at about 11:59 p.m. on July 3, weather permitting.

This Day in Juneau History: Jan. 19, 1987

On Jan. 19, 1987, with revenues half of what they were the year before and an estimated budget deficit ranging from $700-$900 million, the 15th Alaska Legislature began working on the state’s enormous budget deficit. Everyone was present for the Legislature’s first day except for Sen. Frank Ferguson, D-Kotzebue, who resigned shortly after his election because of health problems. Taking his place was Kotzebue businessman and Native leader Willie Hensley, whom Gov. Steve Cowper appointed for the position until the 1988 elections.
