Jet ski accident victim dies at Seattle hospital

Friends and acquaintances of 16-year-old Savannah Cayce gathered at Auke Lake yesterday to mark her passing.

Cayce, a Juneau Douglas High School student and member of the swim team, died early Monday in Seattle from injuries she received when the inner tube she was riding on was struck by a jet ski Saturday afternoon on Auke Lake.

She died at 7:45 a.m. Alaska time at Harborview Medical Center. She had sustained a serious head injury.

On Saturday, Juneau Police received 911 calls reporting a jet ski versus inner tube collision on the lake, and emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Police said in a release that an inner tube being towed by a jet ski “struck another jet ski on the water. Two 16-year-old female Juneau residents were riding on the inner tube. The driver of the jet ski towing the inner tube was identified as a 20-year-old male Juneau resident. The driver of the jet ski that was struck by the inner tube was identified as a 19-year-old male Juneau resident.”

Both teenage girls on the inner tube were injured.

They were taken by ambulance to Bartlett Regional Hospital.

One victim was treated at BRH for a bump on her head and released while Cayce was rushed to Seattle for advanced treatment.

The police said alcohol was not a contributing factor in this collision.

The incident is still under investigation.
