Airport board summarily reelects officers

In its first meeting since the reappointment of its chairman last month, the Juneau International Airport’s board of directors decided without objection Wednesday to retain its incumbent officers.

Board member Ron Swanson put forth a motion early in the meeting to reelect Jerry Godkin as chairman, Butch Laughlin as vice chairman and David Epstein as secretary and treasurer.

“Is there any question to the motion?” asked Godkin, who was appointed to a third three-year term on the board late last month by the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly. “Anybody have any concerns?”

None were voiced.

“I guess the motion passes,” said Godkin. “No concerns.”

“Congratulations,” Airport Manager Jeannie Johnson said.

The board also heard from Catherine Fritz, airport architect, on the status of several ongoing improvement programs at the airport.

“Well, I hope you’ve all been able to use the main entry a bit,” said Fritz, referring to the reopened airport entry. “We still have construction going on around it. … It’s still busy, but we’re making good progress.”

Funding requests for two airport projects — the renovation of the airport terminal and the construction of a Snow Removal Equipment Facility, or SREF, in which to store equipment — recently won backing from the Assembly Finance Committee. That committee voted July 2 to recommend that a $6.9 million request for the terminal project be fulfilled through a $25 million bond issue and that $3.1 million in matching funds for a SREF grant be funded through a temporary extension of the 1 percent special sales tax.

“(It) will take a lot of work to get that bond passed,” Johnson remarked.

In other business, Johnson announced that Heritage Coffee Co. will not operate a location in the airport’s departure lounge.

“They worked very, very hard at trying to determine how to make that a money-maker, and they can’t figure it out,” said Johnson of the coffee company. She added, “We’re still trying to figure out what we can do other than chips and sodas in the departure lounge.”
