Posted: July 15, 2012 - 6:52am

JUNEAU — Two men were uninjured when their boat capsized when a whale breached next to them.
The Coast Guard told KINY that the incident happened late Thursday near Hoonah.
Two unidentified men were halibut fishing from a skiff when the whale breached, causing the 18-foot boat to
capsize.
The two men were able to swim to shore. The Coast Guard says there were able to right the skiff, and called family for help.

capsized

Talked to one of the people from the capsized boat. Juneau Empire, you should investigate better. The story is close but not close enough. There is a great story to learn from talking to the survivors. One of the people on board almost did not survive. He was not able to swim to shore. Please get the story right.

I am the survivor of this accident.

This was the most scariest time of my life and I wish the story was told right. Me and my dad and 2 young boys were fishing in freshwater bay. we had just caught a halibut and were rebaiting a couple of hooks. The hooks were baited and my dad had just dropped the outboard back into the water, and as i stood up in the skiff to move twords the bow I heard a crash i will never forget. All I remeber was seeing big jagged white lines of the whale as it lifted up our boat and flipped us out of it. The whale did not breech beside us, he came up at us mistaking us for food. we were all so lucky. after swimming in the water for around an hour myself and 2 boys made it to a small island atleast 300 yards from the accident. But my dad was still in the water and the current had taken him another direction. Me and the 2 boyse were able to yell for help and my mom came to our rescue in a skiff powered by ores. She picked us up and we headed out to get my dad that had been in the water for atleast an hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. when we got to his side he was in bad shape. his eyes rolled back in his head and barley alert from the waters temp. we got him in the skiff and took off to the house. After several hours of warming up im glad to say we are all ok. It took atleast 5 days before we felt alive. God was definatly looking out for us.
