Three arrests after thrown rock injures boy

Posted: July 16, 2012 - 2:04pm

Two juveniles and an 18-year old male face charges of assault, criminal mischief, giving false information to law enforcement, and being minors who were consuming alcohol after an apparent rock-throwing spree resulted in the injury of a 6-year old boy.

The three were arrested early Sunday morning after police recieved several calls reporting rocks being thrown at vehicles in the area of Stephen Richards Drive and Mendenhall Loop Road. Officers found two juvenile boys and one 18 year-old man hiding in the bushes, and said one of them had rocks in his hands.

They were questioned at 1 a.m. and released to their parents.

Police later learned one of the rocks smashed through the rear window of a vehicle.

“The rock and/or debris stuck a 6 year-old boy riding in the back seat, causing a severe laceration to his cheek,” police saiod in a statement. “The boy’s mother stopped the vehicle and called 911. CCF/R reponded and transported him to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment.”

Police contacted the District Attorney’s office and are recommending charges against the trio.

Book Em, Please

I've occasionally had my car (or watched the car in front of me) get hit with rocks and in the winter, snowballs as I pass Gastineau school. The first time it happened, I stopped the car and tried to find the kids; now I just grit my teeth and fantasize about swerving up on to the lawn to maybe put the fear of God into them.

Agreed, Mr. Fume

Why don't they print the name of the eighteen-year-old?
What great parents these young people must have...

They were released to their parents...

That'll teach them! Release them to the people who are responsible for their horrible behavior and parents who didn't even know or care that they were out at 1:00am! I hope the little 6-year old victim of this gutless act will be ok.

Wow! Story is so messed up....

I am a friend of one of the parents and this story is so messed up and wrong. The newspaper seems to not get their story together. She had to go to the "sidewalk" where the officer told her he approached the boys that were walking. Also, there was no consumption of alcohol and no one was arrested. Yes, they shouldn't have been out at 1:00am and they should not have been throwing rocks. The 2 minors were spending the night at a friends house. My friend is very sorry for the little 6 years olds laceration and hopes that everything is fine with him. Her son has never had any problems with the police or any trouble at all so it is being very hard on her family as well. We are so quick to pass judgement until it is your child that is there needing your help.

Glad my nephew is okay.

I am the Aunt of the 6 year old boy that got hit. My poor little Nephew had to get 17 stitches and has a fractured jaw, this is the result of the boys that were throwing rocks at passing cars. And my sister's car window is busted out from the rock. I hope and pray that something is done. And they have to pay for the crime and pay for the damage to my sister's car. I pray for these boys, and I pray they realize that what they did is wrong. Lord help these boys. Yes, be nice to know who they are.

Please read sallymaej's post above. A 6 year old boy had to get 17 stitches and has a fractured jaw. His mother's rear window will need to be replaced. It's all well and good to be "sorry" - but they should not have been throwing rocks at cars to begin with. Rocks big enough to bust out a rear window and cause a fairly horrific injury to a 6 year old child - who will most likely bear this scar for the rest of his life. Sounds like these "boys" are old enough to get jobs and turn over every penny to the family until the medical and repair costs are covered. Her child needs help alright - but not as much as he needs to help the people he HARMED. And that's not passing judgement - it's justice.
