Photo: Waiting for some grub

Treadwell miners waiting dinner [group of men on boardwalk over pilings]. Photo by W.H. Case (no. 122T); Alaska State Library PCA 39-980

In the description provided by the Alaska State Library Historical Collections, this photo shows a group of Treadwell miners waiting on dinner in the early 1900s. At the time, the Treadwell Mine had become world-famous, employing more than 2,000 miners who worked above and below the ground and supplied the mills with 5,000 tons of ore daily; that was a world record at that time.
