Bartlett hires Brough as new CFO

Ken Brough set to start about Oct. 1

Bartlett Regional Hospital announced Monday that it is adding another key member to its management team, less than a week after its new chief executive officer took the reins.

Ken Brough has been selected as the hospital’s new chief financial officer, CEO Chris Harff announced.

“We feel Ken would be a really good fit. He has a lot of what I would call people skills, operational skills … a lot of technical skills,” said Harff Monday. “What really intrigued me about Ken is the people part.”

Brough is currently the CFO of Star Valley Medical Center in Fairview, Wyo., and previously served as its interim CEO. He is also a certified public accountant.

Jim Strader, Bartlett’s director of community relations, said Brough’s grasp of both the financial and clinical aspects of the medical business is appealing.

“He’s very good at articulating the need for both sides of the equation to work together,” said Strader. The clinical side is critically important – he understands that – he also understands the financial side, and he understands the importance of the clinical side understanding the financial side, too.”

Strader added, “He’s got kind of a unique personality, I think, in that he’s able to … talk about the hard things like numbers, but not in a dry, boring sort of way or strictly a noncompassionate way, but a way that you understand how the two have to work together.”

About 10 candidates for the position were eventually winnowed down to three finalists, Harff said, from which Brough’s name ultimately emerged.

“I even did some Skyping (online video chatting) as late as this weekend,” said Harff.

Brough will likely not be starting at Bartlett for another month and a half or so, which Harff said does not bother her.

“He doesn’t want to leave his employer high and dry, and he’s going to try to get here around Oct. 1,” said Harff. “We want someone who’s conscientious. We want someone who’s going to exit the right way, too. It’s just part of their integrity and character.”

As permanent CFO, Brough will succeed Garth Hamblin, who left the hospital in January amidst a change in Bartlett’s management contract.

That contract change had the effect of switching Bartlett’s CEO and CFO from being employees of Quorum Health Resources, a Brentwood, Tenn.-based management company, to being employees of the City and Borough of Juneau.

Dennis Stillman has been serving as interim CFO since Hamblin’s departure.
