A century ago this was the site of the largest gold mining operation in existence, drawing the best and brightest from the entire world. In its time, according to the Treadwell Historic Preservation and Restoration Society, Inc., the Treadwell Mine had no equal in terms of state-of-the-art mining technology and annual yield. Equally advanced were the socio-economic conditions and amenities enjoyed by the residents of the mining community.
