Judge sentences Juneau man for December burglary

A 30-year-old man was sentenced to serve 15 months in prison for burglarizing a Juneau couple last winter.

Judge Louis Menendez imposed the sentence for Joseph A.S. Allen Monday in Juneau Superior Court.

Allen pleaded guilty in May to attempted burglary, a felony, and attempted forgery, a misdemeanor.

On Monday, the judge ordered Allen serve 24 months with 12 months suspended for the burglary charge and 12 months with nine months suspended for the forgery charge. That’s in accordance with a plea deal reached with prosecutors.

Prosecutors said he stole checkbooks, a rifle, ammo and other items, totaling about $3,800, from the home on Dec. 19. A restitution hearing is scheduled in court later this month.

Assistant District Attorney Angie Kemp said the 15-month sentence is in addition to a 12-month sentence Allen received last month for a separate burglary, which took place in Juneau in October 2011, according to charging documents. That means, Kemp said, Allen will spend the next 27 months behind bars.

Allen was initially arrested more than a week after the Dec. 19 burglary. Police said he was wanted as a “person of interest” in a string of home break-ins in the Mendenhall Valley on Dec. 26.

Kemp told the judge Monday that the investigation into that case is still ongoing. She repeated that point during a phone interview on Tuesday, but said she could not elaborate for fear of jeopardizing the case.

“It’s kind of a complicated scenario because we’re not done with the whole global set of circumstances,” Kemp said. “There are additional investigations that remain pending at this point.”
