A Conditional Use Permit that allows a Tee Harbor housing project to continue received City and Borough of Juneau Planning Commission approval. The permit (CUP 2012 0014), which allows the construction of a 600 square foot accessory apartment in an area without city sewer service, was approved unanimously as part of the commission’s consent agenda on Tuesday.
Constellation Development, LLC plans to build a single-family home with an attached, second-floor accessory apartment on a 1.2-acre parcel on the Favorite Channel side of Cohen Drive in the Tee Harbor Subdivision.
The site has city-supplied water and an on-site septic system. The septic system was approved by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation for a dwelling twice the proposed size.
The proposed home construction is currently under review as BLD 2012 0044.
City staff and elected officials have expressed concern over Juneau’s lack of affordable housing. Making accessory apartments easier to build is one example of city’s attempts to quell this problem.
At the same meeting, commissioners denied a request for a subdivision to build a second home on property abutting Mendenhall Loop Road (Variance 2012 0015).
Commissioners cited safety concerns regarding vehicle access, backing in and out, to the property from the area’s busy arterial road.
