Sixth-graders at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School watch a game of “Chicken Poop Bingo” during their lunch period on Friday. Math teacher Bobby Jones, top center, said the fundraiser was for two of his students with families struggling with health care costs. More than $1500 was raised at $5 per ticket in one week.

So this is what it's come to?

We have to count on chickens pooping because we don't have universal healthcare. "Greatest nation on earth"...

But it looked like a more entertaining math class than I remember as a sixth grader. Way to go, Bobby Jones! An engaged teacher with a big heart.

interesting.....

how some on this board manage to find the negative in absolutely every single idea out there. Party of "no", anyone?
Seriously, rough, and countthis - - - have either of you ever made a positive comment? Ever?

This was a Fantastic idea. Kudos, Mr. Jones!
Probability, addition, multiplication, economics, social studies, and Language Arts (messaging and promotion) all in one project, which also benefits those less fortunate, teaching skills and compassion all at once.
What more could you ask for?

The Real Caption

"So you see kids, where there is one chicken in a pen like this we call it Chicken Poop Bingo. But if we add another chicken into the pen then we call it [filtered word] Fighting! Place your bets."

countthis......

Do you measure the time between them in years?

Honestly - this was a project the kids (judging by the photo) were clearly interested in, and it raised a respectable amount of money for some families in need. I just don't get your knee-jerk reaction to dump on it. Chicken poop - so what? Lots of kids grew up on farms. Lots of kids have pets. Try to see the silver lining more often - you'll likely be a happier person, and more fun to be around.

Why hens?

My Mom ran a cockfighting barn in New Mexico. Get 2 roosters with gaffs. That's where the BIG bucks are!

Oh, Chicken Feathers for Fly Fishing!

Place your bets? Been spurred by my own banty rooster (left ankle). A rooster flying back at you with those spurs and wings flying isn't funny. The chicken poop bingo is safer for the children.

$1,500.00 for medical costs, A WINNER!

This could be considered personal if not discussed as medically accurate, the sky is falling (on my kidneys). The test can be purchased online, with instructions. What to do? This tourist town is a world of germs that puts medical (not psychological) stresses on people. That is the fight.

40 hours, $11.00 per hour, no insurance, no work = no pay, future hospital bill, no pfd. Math for all us children.

Juneau Education

So many things left out of article. Were there winners of money or prizes. That would be gambling which would be against the law. Great education for these grade school children that if for a "perceived" good cause anything goes.
Just don't draw a stick figure with what appears to be a firearm. Off to the principal's office and a suspension from school possibility.

To think that an educator would be allowed to host such a disgusting event. Must be something he learned while getting his colege degree in teaching. And now we know why some in Juneau end their schooling with not being able to do any math without a computer or calculator. But great that they can know how often a chicken relieves itself. Disciplinary action action against this teacher is in order, but maybe not in Juneau where the more disgusting something appears the more the public is in favor of it.

Recipient

If all you can do is provide a negative comment, don’t comment at all.
This was a great fundraiser that engaged the kids. This school raised money and helped not one but TWO families fighting cancer!
I live my life one day at a time. My husband is fighting Stage IV brain cancer. Being the recipient of this fundraiser, I can tell you we appreciate the fact that the school supports us. It’s not like we are living off free healthcare and milking the system. I work my butt off. I have great insurance. I take care of my family. But when you get medical bills coming in thousands or tens of thousands, even the deductables are high. Monthly travels to see an oncologist. Treatment every two weeks. You struggle to make ends meet, you do what you can. I appreciate EVERY donation we received because of this. We can make it to yet another oncologist appointment.

Not Abuse

Am so surprised at the negative comments here. Maybe it's because my hens are pets, but I don't see anything disgusting about a little bit of poop on paper that's picked up and disposed of. And, as the owner of the hens in the picture, I have to object to whoever called this abuse. My hens didn't mind at all - they were far more interested in the cracked corn I scattered for them than they were in the kids around them. Maybe it's because they started life out in a kindergarten classroom, but they are routinely picked up, played with, squealed over... And don't mind a bit. In fact, when roaming they will come running to us, knowing they'll get picked up... and knowing they'll probably get a treat in the end. I'm proud of the kids who wanted to do something for these families, and will gladly take my hens on another field trip if it's for a good cause like this.

@My2cents

Best of luck to your family! I think this was a wonderful and creative fundraiser. Some people are obviously too uptight and can't find the good in anything. My prayers are with you and your family and the other family that received this gift. God Bless you!

Poop and Diarrhea

I must say that I am shocked at the negative comments left here. countthis, isldandhopper, and JVampire- your comments were rude, misguided and/or very offensive. My son attends DZ and I don't appreciate you (isldandhopper) calling him a "doorknob licker". And bashing the teacher that pulled this together to raise money for families in need is pretty low (countthis and JVampire). And those chickens are PETS that are loved and taken care of by their owners (isldandhopper). Perhaps the issue that we should be worrying about here is not the chicken poop, but rather the diarrhea that was running off your fingertips as you typed your rude and useless comments. Great job kids and teachers. You pulled together, as team, and contributed to the community around you. Keep up the good work!

My $1,500.00 Lame Egg Winner Comment.

Don't make me describe collecting freshly laid eggs after the chickens cluck very loudly.

I can bring back happy chicken memories very easily. I could have spared $5 for the families that have greater needs than any medical bills.

I was with my father-in-law at home when he died of brain cancer. My step-mother has lost one lung in addition to recent chemotherapy. My ex-husband lost a kidney to cancer (tested only at one location). They all had insurance. Most of the medical costs were covered and paid in full.

Technology needs to move faster than cancer cells. Doctors need to be better at early detection. Patients need to complain about pain in addition to lessening the bacteria or viruses that wear down the body.

This is what people need to read: The CDC Weekly Morbidity and Mortality report clearly states recommendations, reports, surveillance summaries, and notifiable diseases that weaken our immune systems.

Juneau, Alaska is in the middle of a world of germs every cruise season. Thousands and thousands of people, some that may not have adequate medical care, need a vacation and visit Alaska. Someone has the data somewhere about the outside contributing factors to our health care. Most of us live here with no road out, right?

Hugs, best thoughts, pained tears at the thought of loss, then strength and power to purterb the doctors into research and accountability.

There should be no lazy egg laying medical professionals in this state capital. The sky is falling.

At first I thought...

...it was a crappy idea (sorry - really, I just couldn't resist!) But, then I got to thinking (a very dangerous undertaking I assure you:-) - what better way to ensure participation in the fundraiser? Any 6th grader worth his or her salt would definitely show up for this event, mainly cuz it's just plain strange. Kudos to the organizers of this worthy, humorous event! And to the negative bloggers: Lighten up, sour-grapes grouches! It's community fun, and it's is for a good cause.
