Children from the Juneau Cooperative Preschool line up to watch a Public Works employee dredge Gold Creek above the spillway at Cope Park on Tuesday. The area behind the spillway needs to be cleaned out on a yearly basis because of gravel and sediment washing down the creek.

How the city can take an excavator that has grease and hydraulic oil all over it into a creek that drains into the ocean. If a private co. wanted to do this they would have to apply for some ungodly amount of permits, pay the city a bunch of money. Possibly take water samples. Maybe even be denied because of the fish could be harmed. ??????
thespout is right
No joke! Imagine what kind of response from the government would be if a private citizen took a track hoe into a stream. At the least, there would be fines. At worst, possibly an arrest.
Personally, I don't think that the real issue is irreversable damage being done to the stream, but rather the over-reaction of bureaucrats when a citizen (taxpayer) breaks one of their rules. Where did common sense go?
Gold Creek
No worries about fish. The half-mile smooth concrete funnel sending the creek to the ocean fixed that a long time ago. But yes, ironic that CBJ can do what others could not.
I wonder if they work the
I wonder if they work the gravel through a sluice box!? Might be a little income for the city.
It's not called Gold Creek on
It's not called Gold Creek on account of the fact that it's a pretty little golden creek. The city could probably pay for the project if it were to run that gravel through a sluice. The guys that ran the old Juneau Ready Mix used to run their gravel through a sluice and they got lots of gold. I heard that the owner did in on account of the fact that he got tired of having the streets of Juneau paved with gold.
