Police are looking for the vandal(s) who cut the thick barrier ropes that act as fencing for part of the Airport Dike Trail earlier this month.

The Juneau Police Department Crime of the Week for Sept. 28 is in reference to a vandalism at the Juneau International Airport.

Sgt. Paul Hatch said in a news release that JPD received a report the morning of Sept. 5 that an unknown person cut the thick barrier ropes that serve as a fence for part of the Airport Dike Trail. The vandalism took place sometime the prior night.

The release states the rope strands are very thick, and the replacement and repair costs are estimated at $5,000.

Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is encouraged to log onto the Juneau Crime Line at juneaucrimeline.com and report the tip. Tipsters are guaranteed anonymity and can be rewarded.

Crime Line is a nonprofit organization composed of a cross-section of the community and is designed to aid police investigations.

WOW!

Thats expensive rope! Shame on whoever approved spending that kind of money for a rope that can be easily destroyed. But I am sure the dollar amounts are inflated.

rope attack

I've been walking that trail for years - wondered why the new renovations included a rope 'entrance'? Looks odd and out of place here - better suited for a steak & seafood restaurant.

will keep happening...

unless, juvenille or not, we hold vandals accountable. Any kid vandalizing stuff in town should have to work off the cost of replacement. They could pick up dog poop, work on trail maintenance, paint city structures, sort garbage, wash city trucks, whatever. There simply must be consequences for this kind of carp....

Dear CBJ

instead of replacing the rope, try repairing it. If the CBJ Docks and Harbors Dept doesn't have this line laying around, try Alaska Marine Highway. http://www.samsonrope.com/splicing-pdfs/8Strand_C1_End%20for%20End_AUG20...

I quit using

that trail once they put all the fencing up. I don't like the feeling of being herded, on a public trail. Next thing you know, they'll be painting stripes, and putting in traffic lights. Talk about wasting public money.....

I'm with dartbucks, 5 K to fix it ?? Splice it back together, and re-stretch it....done!!

Dear CBJ

Splice the fence. It doesn't look that hard to do and the "fixed" fence doesn't have to bear any sort of weight. It's just basically a barrier.

I call for Singapore-style

I call for Singapore-style justice. A beating with rattan cane for the perp would cure the bad attitude that induced this behavior.

First of all..

@Ima49

What you call the "Dike Trail" has a proper name. Officially known as an EVAR (Emergency Vehicle Access Road.) It is also on airport property. It's purpose is not for the public, although it has been made available to everyone for their enjoyment. Main thing to take away is that should an aircraft go down outside the fence line, ARFF trucks and other life saving equipment can get on scene without to much of a challenge, and hopefully save a life. That's why that trail exists, not to walk your dog and have you feel like herded cattle.

Also, the city has an policy that a certain percentage of the budget of any project the city has, has to go to aesthetic purposes. Gardens, benches, art work, etc.
