Amalga Harbor roadwork ahead of schedule

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) announced Wednesday that roadwork on Amalga Harbor road is ahead of schedule. As a result, the previously announced road closure dates have been changed.

Amalga Harbor Road will now be closed to public access from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday this week.

Amalga Harbor Road will no longer be closed to public access next Monday as previously announced.

Drivers planning to access Amalga Harbor via Glacier Highway may continue to experience temporary delays daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m through Tuesday.

DOT&PF will be placing temporary Acrow bridges, a brand of prefabricated, modular steel bridge, over two sections of Peterson Creek along Amalga Harbor Road. Ongoing bridge inspection and maintenance has determined that the current bridges will not meet load requirements for DOT&PF winter maintenance vehicles. Plans are in place to install permanent bridges in 2013.

DOT&PF thanks drivers in advance for their patience and understanding while road work continues. The department asks that drivers be alert to flaggers and new traffic patterns, heavy equipment and to please use extreme caution when approaching and traveling through the work zone. Please refer to 511.alaska.gov for further detail and updates.
