Juneau-based prosecutor to receive Attorney General's award

A federal prosecutor in Juneau has won an award from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Attorney General.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska announced Thursday that Jack S. Schmidt was chosen to receive the Attorney General’s Award for Outstanding Contributions by a New Employee of the Department of Justice.

“We are very proud that the Department of Justice has chosen to recognize Mr. Schmidt’s outstanding contributions to justice and protecting the citizens of Southeast, Alaska,” U.S. Attorney for Alaska Karen L. Loeffler said in the release.

Schmidt joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in September 2009 and was the first assistant U.S. attorney assigned to the then-newly opened Juneau branch office.

He was praised in the release for handling a diverse list of cases — from financial crimes, crimes against children, fish and wildlife, firearm and immigration violations and large-scale drug distribution conspiracies affecting Southeast — in his three years of service.

The release states Schmidt will be honored at a ceremony at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 17.

Loeffler said, “Opening a branch office in Juneau was a longtime goal of the United States Attorney’s Office and Mr. Schmidt has been a wonderful choice to lead the office’s increased service to our Southeast communities.”
