Man wanted on sex abuse charges arrested in Nome

Grand jury indicted John W. Strickling on five felony charges last month

A man wanted for child sex abuse was arrested in Nome this week.

Court records show Alaska State Troopers arrested John W. Strickling, 66, on a $100,000 warrant on Tuesday.

Strickling appeared in the Nome courthouse Wednesday and was ordered to be transported to Juneau, according to court documents. He is scheduled to appear in Juneau Superior Court on Monday.

A Juneau grand jury indicted Strickling on five felony counts on sexual abuse of a minor last month. A warrant was issued for his arrest the day the indictment was handed up on Sept. 21.

Strickling is accused of abusing a minor under 13 years old, whom he knew, from 2002 to 2009 in both Juneau and Ketchikan. According to charging documents, the abuse continued for years before the alleged victim reported it to her mother. The mother then reported it to police in January 2011.

Strickling made admissions of guilt when interviewed by police over the phone in July, according to an affidavit.

He could be facing up to 99 years in prison if convicted. He is represented by the Public Defender Agency.
