Airport main entry nearly complete

John Fowler of ASRC McGraw Constructors builds a bench for the front of the Juneau International Airport on Monday.

ASRC McGraw Constructors is nearing completion of the main entry to the Juneau International Airport.

McGraw was awarded the $1.1 million contract in September as the lowest bidder. Construction began in February.

McGraw is now expected to complete a substantial inspection for the season-long facelift project within the week.

“ASRC-McGraw's Superintendent on the JNU Terminal Main Entry Renovation, Cliff Ouellette, indicated to me this morning that he plans on requesting the Substantial Completion Inspection later this week,” said AIA Juneau Airport architect Catherine Fritz in an email interview. “That means we are nearly done.”

With the gift shop complete ”all that remains is a bit of exterior welding and electrical work on the new canopy,” Fritz said. “I expect to have the exterior fencing removed by the end of this week.”

When opened, the renovated entry will have updated walls and a connection to the airport’s geothermal heat pumps. McGraw was also contracted to replace an exterior canopy and update the coffee shop and gift shop.

McGraw installed automatic doors that are both energy efficient and energy conserving.

“The new canopy at street level gives more weather protection and allows more circulation space since the columns have been removed,” Fritz said.

A rarely used second-floor deck was replaced with large windows “that look out to the Mendenhall Glacier, making a very pleasant seating area in the restaurant,” Fritz said.
