Photograph postcard of “‘Yaxte’ Big Dipper Totem, Juneau, Alaska,” photo by Oroway, circa 1900.
In a recent Empire article this totem was reportedly carved in 1941 by Frank St. Clair, a Tlingit from Hoonah working with the CCC. I wasn't aware the CCC operated that late. Fred Ordway (who wasn't even born in 1900) was killed in a plane crash in 1938 which makes it unlikely he personally took the photo.
Should I make comments? No one is leaving thumbs up (or down) & I don't know if anyone reads my comments or perhaps they are boring people.
Previous Empire stories wrote about this pole being carved with CCC support.
