GCI to buy Juneau's KATH, 2 other Alaska TV stations

ANCHORAGE — A subsidiary of Alaska’s largest telecommunications company is buying three television stations, including the CBS affiliate in Anchorage and the Sitka and Juneau NBC affiliates.

General Communication, Inc.’s subsidiary, Denali Media Holdings, is acquiring KTVA-TV from Alaska Broadcastings Co./Media News Group of Denver. It’s also purchasing NBC affiliates KATH-TV in Juneau and KSCT-TV in Sitka from Juneau-based North Star Broadcasting.

GCI President Ron Duncan says the intent is to turn the three stations into a statewide news and entertainment leader.

GCI said in a release that John Tracy has been tapped as lead consultant to rebuild and rebrand the news department. Tracy was the news director at Anchorage’s NBC affiliate, KTUU-TV, from 1989-2008.

“I welcome the challenge of helping restore KTVA to the community leader it once was and building on KATH and KSCT’s reputations,” Tracy said in the same news release.

The purchases are subject to Federal Communication Commission approval, which is expected early next year.
