The state has a new chief of economic development, and the Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau (JCVB) will be looking for a new leader.
Lorene Palmer has resigned as president and CEO of JCVB to take the new post, she told the Empire on Friday.
Palmer said she resigned two weeks ago and will begin her new job on Nov. 26.
“I’m happy to announce today that my new position will be the Division Director for Economic Development with the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development,” she wrote in a recent message to some local business leaders.
“I’m excited about taking my tourism marketing and communication skills to a broader level that will include tourism, minerals, timber and fisheries.”
She said the department has 54 employees and a $25 million budget with offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and Tok.
“Educating Alaskans about the programs and tools available to help them start new businesses or expand their existing business is one of the key elements of this new position. The other is helping to create demand for Alaska’s products and services through a variety of marketing programs/agencies and coordinating with public and private entities to develop a thriving economy for our state,” she wrote. “I am especially happy that my new position will allow me to remain engaged with the visitor industry via the tourism office and the contract with ATIA.”

Way to go Lorene!
Not Opinionated
Opinionated, no. Cowardly, yes. Lorene is a great choice for this position and she has worked hard for many years for JCVB and Juneau.
Too Opinionated....
To: Opinionated
Are you high or did your parents feed you slabs of asbestos garnished with lead based paint chips? I have had the distinct privilege of working for Ms.Palmer in the past and not only was she the most professional employer I have ever dealt with but her ability to mentor her employees is unparallelled. How dare you insult a women who has done so much for so many. It is leaders like Lorene Palmer who not only create new jobs and stimulate new economic growth but also advocate for this community. Hiding behind a security blanket of anonymity is shameful and pathetic and if I wasn't afraid of physically making you dumber I would slap the stupid out of your mouth.
I'll make you a deal Opinionated, make public your name and I will follow suit. Or perhaps you cling too tightly to your blanket and lack the conviction your words indicate you have but your demeanor clearly suggests you are without.
