Troopers respond to report of assault on Juneau-bound ferry

Also make warrant arrest, respond to cabin theft and overdue hikers

Alaska State Troopers in Juneau say they responded to an assault that occurred aboard a ferry travelling from Haines to Juneau.

Troopers said in a dispatch that they received the report at about 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The alleged victim, a 23-year-old man from Haines, reported that a 21-year-old man from Haines punched him in his face and broke his jaw while the ferry was en route to Juneau, the dispatch states.

The names of the suspect and victim were not released. Troopers say the investigation is continuing.

Troopers also made a warrant arrest and investigated a report of theft near Juneau on Tuesday.

A dispatch states Troopers arrested Haines resident Thomas Lippy, 30, in Juneau at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday for failing to appear in court on the original charge of theft of services. Lippy was taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center on $100 bail.

At about 2:30 p.m., Troopers received a report of a theft at a cabin on Horse and Colt Island near Juneau.

A $250 chain saw and a $2,500 Arctic Cat four-wheel ATV were reported stolen. The ATV was later recovered, but the chain saw is still missing, the release states.

The investigation is continuing.

Troopers said in a Monday dispatch they responded to a report of overdue hikers, who ended up not being in distress.

The hikers — a Juneau resident with his 19-year-old son and three other males — were hunting over the weekend and had not returned on Saturday as planned, a dispatch states.

The party was in a 22-foot fiberglass boat that is currently anchored in Oliver Inlet, within a mile of Seymour Canal Cabin.

The Coast Guard sent a vessel from Sector Juneau and a helicopter from Air Station Sitka to search for them, the dispatch states.

The search was unsuccessful, but the party later contacted the Coast Guard and let them know they were not in distress and planned to return to Juneau on Tuesday.
