100 Years: Businesses with history

Juneau is home to several businesses that can trace their roots back to the early days of Juneau’s history.


• For 100 years the Juneau Empire has brought news to Juneau and for well over a century business has brought goods and services to Southeast Alaska residents.

Alaska Laundry and Dry Cleaners was founded in 1895. Its current incorporation dates back to 1905.

Current company officials include shareholders John and Jane Mackinnon, Vice President Neil Doogan and President Neil Mackinnon.

The company gives often to philanthropic events even offering to launder clothes donated to a Coast Guard drive.

The laundry and dry cleaners is located at 9106 Mendenhall Mall Road.

Alaska Energy and Resource Company was founded in 1893. Juneau still powers homes and businesses with generation facilities it built. The company incorporated Alaska Electric Light and Power in 1987.

Company officials include Vice President Neil Mackinnon, Vice President Timothy McLeod and President William Corbus.

J and D Telephone was founded in 1893.

• Juneau’s First National Bank was founded in Juneau in 1898. According to City and Borough of Juneau archives the bank moved into the Lewis Building (Peer A Mid Beads) in December of that year and stayed until fire forced it out in 1925.

Shattuck and Grummett Insurance was established originally as Shattuck and Company in 1898 by founder Henry Shattuck and E.F. Cassell. The business moved to Juneau two years later.

B.M. Behrends Bank was established in 1891. It moved into its current location in downtown Juneau in 1914. The bank was acquired by Key Bank in 1989.
