Poole resigns from school board

Former board clerk recently moved to Oklahoma

Posted: November 15, 2012 - 1:10am  |  Updated: November 15, 2012 - 4:57pm

Kim Poole announced her resignation from the Juneau School District Board of Education Tuesday night, creating a vacancy on the board that will be filled on an interim basis until next October’s municipal election.

Poole, former clerk of the board, moved to Alva, Okla., last month, closing down the small business she owned, Glacier View TLC Pharmacy. She said at the time that she would resign her school board seat if she found housing in Oklahoma and decided to stay (http://bit.ly/T3J9tY).

“I did indeed get to Oklahoma, and I’m working for my uncle in his store and have found a place to live,” said Poole Wednesday evening. “I feel quite optimistic about being able to be here and to establish a new role in a new community.”

Sally Saddler, president of the school board, said Wednesday that Poole will be missed.

“I will miss serving with Kim Poole,” Saddler said. “She was a terrific clerk and always offered insightful comments on issues that went before us as a board. While I’m sad for us as a board and I know it was a difficult decision for her to make to leave Juneau, I do know that she is in a good place with respect to her job and her family.”

Vice President Sean O’Brien called Poole a “team player” who “contributed a lot” to the school board.

“We’re going to miss her,” said O’Brien. “Kim was an extremely valuable member of the team and asset. She had great poise and … very rational and cool thinking, very analytical. She really offered a lot of insight. She was also very personable.”

Kristin Bartlett, JSD chief of staff, said of Poole, “The school district, and, I know, the board, certainly appreciated her service. She was a valuable member of the school board.”

Poole, who was first elected to the school board in 2010, said she “thoroughly enjoyed” her time on the board.

“I think it was a remarkable group to work with, for which I’m very thankful,” said Poole.

Due to Poole’s resignation, a new board member will take over her seat next month and fill it until the 2013 municipal election. That member will be selected by vote of the board at its Dec. 11 regular meeting.

“Once they take the oath of office, then they’ll be able to participate in the voting,” Bartlett said.

Saddler said, “We intend to get somebody seated at our Dec. 11 meeting so they’re ready to hit the ground running and start working on the budget.”

Applicants will interview for the position in an open session of the board, which Bartlett said has not yet been scheduled but will likely directly precede the Dec. 11 meeting.

Applicants for the position cannot be state legislators or employees of the school district, and they must be qualified Juneau voters.

Applications for the position, including an accompanying questionnaire for applicants to complete, are available on the JSD website and at the Central Office on Glacier Avenue. They must be received by Dec. 5 to be considered.

Michelle Johnston, a past president of the Academic Policy Committee for Ketchikan’s Tongass School of Arts and Sciences who ran unsuccessfully for a school board seat last month, confirmed Wednesday that she intends to apply for the vacant position.

“I’m concerned about the budget and where budget cuts will be made this next year,” said Johnston, who attended Tuesday’s school board meeting.

The other candidate who fell short in seeking a school board seat last month is KTOO-FM board of directors member Will Muldoon

On Friday, Will Muldoon said that he could not be reached earlier because his phone had been lost in the Gastineau Apartments fire, but added that he is interested in the vacant seat.

“I do intend to apply for the vacancy,” Muldoon said.
