Dec. 3 is deadline to donate to Coast Guard coat and blanket drive

The deadline is looming to make donations to the U.S. Coast Guard’s annual coat and blanket drive for Southeast Alaska.

The deadline to donate gently-used coats and blankets is Dec. 3, according to a release from Lt. j.g. David Boyle.

Donations can be dropped off in a bin at the following locations in Juneau: Walmart, Safeway, Fred Meyer, IGA Foodland, Super Bear Supermarket, Nugget Mall and the Juneau Federal Building.

Petersburg is also accepting donations this year. Their donation sites are the Coast Guard building on Dock Street and the Petersburg Parks and Recreation Center. The deadline to donate there is the same.

The donations will be delivered to families in need throughout the Southeast on a U.S. Coast Guard cutter in December. The Coast Guard cutter will visit and drop off items in Hoonah, Angoon, Kake, Pelican and Elfin Cove.

The coat and blanket drive is cosponsored by the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association and the Coast Guard Officer’s Association.

In a release, Boyle thanked Taku Fisheries for donating the bins used to collect the items; Alaska Laundry and Dry Cleaners for donating time and equipment to clean the donated items; and Les Schwab Tire Center for donating heavy-duty tire bags that are used to keep the donated items dry on the cutter during delivery.
