Survivor of boat capsize dies from alcohol-related incident, police say

The sole survivor of a boat capsize that drowned two brothers died early Monday morning in a North Douglas residence, according to police.

The cause of death is unknown, but police say alcohol was involved, according to Lt. David Campbell, a spokesman with the Juneau Police Department. No foul play is suspected.

Campbell said in a phone interview that Jim Brown Jr., 26, was found unconscious and not breathing in a residence in the 8000 block of North Douglas Highway.

About 10 people were in the residence at the time, and three people in the group found him and attempted CPR, Campbell said.

Police and medics were called at 11:49 p.m. Sunday, and medics arrived on scene shortly thereafter. Police then arrived on scene at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

Brown was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:29 a.m. Monday, Campbell said. Next of kin have been notified. Campbell said Brown showed no sign of trauma except a small laceration on his forehead.

Police requested an autopsy, and the body will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage. Cause of death will be determined by the examiner’s office.
Brown survived a boat capsize near Tenakee Springs on Nov. 23. A wave went over the stern of an 18-foot skiff, causing it to sink.

Casey and Kelly Newman, 26 and 23, drowned, while Brown was the only one to make it to shore. Brown alerted a local Tenakee resident, which prompted a search and rescue effort.

The Newman brothers were recovered, but unable to be revived.
