Help keep fire hydrants clear of snow

The fire department is asking residents to help keep fire hydrants clear of snow.

Capital City Fire/Rescue Deputy Fire Marshal Sven Pearson said in an online dispatch that winter months bring a special concern to CCFR.

Snow can often hide fire hydrants making them impossible to find quickly, he said. In the event of a fire, firefighters can lose precious time by having to locate them and shovel them out.

Pearson asked residents and employees to clear off the hydrant closest to your residence or business. The hydrants require a three foot clearance on all sides, he added.

“Clearing the snow around a hydrant is an easy way for residents interested in lending a hand to improve neighborhood safety in our community,” Pearson wrote.

Pearson added that when shoveling snow to please be aware of vehicle traffic, do not stand in the street and to be careful not to slip and fall out into the roadway.
