Juneau Sustainability Commission gets new chair

Posted: December 6, 2012 - 1:09am

Nancy Waterman recently stepped down as chair of the City and Borough of Juneau Sustainability Commission.

Vice-Chair Kate Troll moved into the leadership role.

“Temporarily,” Troll said.

Waterman was elected to the position in February. She has been on the commission for over two years.

The commission will hold its next elections in February, 2013.

Troll holds a Master's Degree in Natural Resource Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Troll has specialized in sustainability through her work with Alaska commercial fisheries, the Alaska Board of Forestry and environmental non-profits.

She also is a Juneau Empire opinion page columnist,

The Sustainability Commission has scheduled its annual retreat for January of 2013.

“An important effort,” Troll said. “It shapes our work for the next year and beyond.”

The retreat typically runs for about three hours and is open to the public.

The commission plans to meet in December to work on a new sustainability website. Its next work session is scheduled for Jan. 2.

Why Mad, are you replacing Troll after her temporary promotion? I know you cant be referring to Kate with your comment, as you cant be a simpleton and get a masters from Yale...

more Agenda 21

The UN's Agenda 21 is creeping unchecked into every facet of American life. Catch words like "sustainable development" and "smart growth" are blindly accepted as good, worthwhile things. But without definition, they are merely pretty phrases to hide behind. The true meaning and outcome of these "ideals" is nothing more than the sneaky abolishment of our private property rights.

Just yesterday the US Senate voted on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Disabled, and while there is some mighty attractive language in there about protecting rights, "similar to the ADA" says an email I recieved from Senator Murkowski, the fundamental purpose of the convention is to take away parental rights in this situation so that the UN or whatever governing body we sell out to can determine what is best for disabled children. In addition, this treaty is deliberately vague in not defining "disabled" so that it is entirely possible that a baby with say autism can become a ward of the state whenever said authority deems it in the best interest of themselves. The officials can also then determine treatment, such as neglect and discontinuing fluids and nourishment, if it is decided that the community at large can be best served by having one less mouth to feed. If this treaty, a continuing facet of Agenda 21, ever passes, the UN will require all babies with disabilities (born in any country that signs the treaty) to be registered with the UN. If that does not smack of Nazi Germany and make your skin crawl, nothing will. In the UK, the citizens were not so vigilant and have let the UN get their feet WAY in the door. Not sure if it's too late for them, but we can certainly learn by their horrific example: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2240075/Now-sick-babies-death-pa...

I'm embarrassed, sickened, and disappointed to report that both of our Senators voted to ratify the treaty. Thankfully, their votes were not enough to sway the common sense of the rest of the Senators.

Don't buy it? Call CBJ right now and ask if we are members of ICLEI (pronounced ick-ly, appropriately enough). Ask how much we pay in dues each year and who made the decision to join? Ask if it was voted on by the residents of the city. Ask what we are required to do for our membership in this organization and what we get in return. Google ICLEI or see their website at www.icleiusa.org.

Yes, I have completely gone off on a tangent about this, but whenever I hear/see the word "sustainability", my blood boils. All these factors are intertwined since they are being pushed by something other than our own people. We are an independant nation, with tons of knowledgable experts on both sides of the aisle, in every single discipline. Shouldn't we be able to govern ourselves without undue input from the UN? Call your Senators and let them know.

Kate is an expert!

Surely Kate is one of the experts I just mentioned. She has a lot of schooling and experience with this subject, and hopefully has been taught to think for herself instead of subscribing to these barely veiled mandates of ICLEI and the UN. Time will tell, but maybe this will be a fortuitous turning point for Juneau.... Hooray!
