AT&T’s WiMAX Internet service is slated to go the way of the dodo.

Customers who currently receive their home Internet through the wireless blue modem will need to find alternative service by Jan. 31, 2013.

“AT&T decided earlier this year to discontinue our Alaska High Speed Internet via WiMAX service,” AT&T spokesperson Andy Colley said in an email interview. “We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers.”.

The cellular and broadband company stopped offering WiMAX to new customers as of March 30.

Customers using WiMAX should have received a letter in April and August warning of the impending end of service, Colley said. AT&T anticipates sending a third letter at the beginning of 2013, he said.

AT&T is ditching the antiquated WiMAX service and is instead focusing on wireless broadband services, such as Long Term Evolution technology and Wi-Fi hot spots.

Customers can mail their modems back to AT&T on the company’s dime. They can also drop the blue modems off at Juneau Electronics at 1000 Harbor Way, or at AT&T's retail store at 9400 Glacier Highway.

“With new AT&T Mobile Share plans, new and existing customers can share a single bucket of data across smartphones, tablets and other compatible devices, including Mobile Hot Spot and USB modem devices,” Colley said.
