The general manager of the Capital City Weekly newspaper, which is the Juneau Empire’s sister publication, was arrested earlier this week on an outstanding warrant for failure to pay child support, a felony.

Dale Edward Smith, 50, was arrested at the CCW offices on North Franklin Street at about 9:30 a.m. Monday morning, and he was taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

Lt. David Campbell, a spokesman for the Juneau Police Department, said in a phone interview on Tuesday that the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Office notified JPD of the outstanding $2,500 extraditable warrant at about 7 a.m. Monday.

The warrant had been outstanding since 2009, according to Smith’s attorney, Public Defender Timothy Ayer.

Smith owes more than $20,000 in child support, according to Assistant District Attorney Amy Williams.

During a bail hearing on Thursday, Juneau District Court Judge Thomas Nave maintained bail at $10,000.

“It’s my responsibility to make sure he’s answerable to these charges,” Nave said.

Williams had argued Smith posed a flight risk since he is new to Juneau and has little ties to the community. Smith was hired at CCW this fall.

Ayer had requested the bail amount be lowered, saying Smith was not running away from the charges, despite the allegation that Smith is a fugitive from justice.

Ayer said Smith has been in Missouri for nearly a decade, and that’s where he was divorced, and the mother later moved to Kansas. Ayer told the judge that Smith was never informed of the outstanding warrant, and Smith never lived in Kansas.

Smith’s wife, identified in court documents as Stacy Smith, posted the $10,000 bail after the hearing on Thursday afternoon, according to court documents.

Smith is next due in court on Jan. 9. He is still employed at CCW, according to Juneau Empire Publisher Mark Bryan.

CCW is Southeast Alaska’s widely distributed newspaper. It and the Juneau Empire are owned by Morris Communications, headquartered in Augusta, Georgia.
