'One-pot' meth lab found in Juneau home

Posted: December 14, 2012 - 11:46am  |  Updated: December 16, 2012 - 1:12am

Alaska State Troopers say they found evidence of a meth lab at a Juneau home while executing a search warrant on Thursday.

Troopers discovered and seized six “one-pot” method methamphetamine labs and precursors associated with those labs at the Kanata Street home at about 3:10 p.m., according to a trooper dispatch.

“One-pot” means that the chemical reaction is confined within one pot, usually a soda bottle.

The lab was processed by investigators with the Alaska Bureau of Investigations’ Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs (SEACAD) task force. SEACAD also contacted the owner of the residence, whose name was not released.

Law enforcement will be recommending the residence owner be charged with second-degree drug misconduct, according to the dispatch. The charges will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office.

The warrant was executed by SEACAD with assistance from the Juneau Police Department’s Drug Enforcement Unit, the FBI and Alaska Wildlife Troopers.

Kanata Street is located of Mendenhall Loop Road in the Mendenhall Valley.

Low-income housing

I'm pretty sure all the houses on that street are owned by the Tlingit-Haida regional housing authority and rented out at little to no cost to "qualifying individuals"....

Sounds like a nice neighborhood.

Not all...

Not all the houses on that street are low-income housing owed by T&H. Some of those houses were bought by hard working, honest people. Yes, a lot of the houses on the street are owned by T&H, but not all. Don't just assume that.

And for the most part, it is a nice neighborhood.

low income housing

Does not have to mean crime and drugs. The housing wasn't built to create a dealer den. There are hard working families there too. Do not lump them all together.

Unfortunately, that type seems to infest low income areas. Why is that? Is it because dealers are poor and lack income? Is it because there is no money to be made cooking? I don't think so. I think it is because that is considered status quo. Their neighbors are so downtrodden and feel so insignifigant, they are less likely to report suspicious activity. And there are those who obviously look down their noses at them, see cracks about low income housing.

More affluent neighbors are more likely to feel safe and comfortable reporting. They feel like they will be heard and believed. But guess what? This was a "one pot" kitchen. Someone did stand up. Someone did say "not in my neighborhood". I wish that brave soul a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We need to take back our neighborhoods. We need to give all our children a safe place to grow up.

Now maybe

The bus stop at loop and back loop won't be full of junkies every time I go by. I was wondering why they had started hanging around out there.

Toxic waste site

Unfortunately, meth labs contaminate the house with toxic chemicals that precipitate on the wall, floors, everywhere.

It will probably be condemned until cleanup is over, which the property owner will have to pay for. All sheetrock and floor coverings will have to be disposed of as toxic waste. Cabinets will have to be removed, as will appliances and almost everything else in the house.

If it was a zero lot line house, the other unit will also be contaminated.

Nasty stuff.

Meth

I can't believe that people are so stupid to even smoke this stuff, it makes such ugly wounds on your face making you look like a freek. People teaching other people to smoke it warn them not to exhale on another persons face because it will burn their skin, just think what it is doing to their lungs. They are told not to hold it in either like pot smokers do. This crap is more chemical than drug too, you pretty much have to have no real reason to live at this point I guess. People that use it become peranoid for life, is it really worth ruining your life for this crap?
