Applicants postponed a proposal to bring industry to an Egan Highway roadside parcel placed between the Mendenhall Wetlands Game Refuge and Juneau International Airport.
Becknell Inc. applied for a rezone of Hosinger Pond to a combination of industrial and light commercial uses.
City staff recommended the commission deny the rezoning request. Staff findings said the proposal is not in consent with the land use maps of the city’s comprehensive plan. The rezoning is also larger than two acres.
The 82.66-acre historic gravel pit is located east of the airport, across Egan Highway from Fred Meyer. It abuts the Mendenhall Wetlands Game Refuge.
Of the site’s nearly 83 acres, 62 are planned the by applicant to be used for light commercial.
Becknell’s AME 2012 0011 had been scheduled to be heard by the Planning Commission on Dec. 11. It is not scheduled for the commission’s Tuesday meeting.

Add commentAmerica is in decline because:
1. Corporations exert disproportionate influence on our political system, enabling legislation that benefits their short-term financial gains to the detriment of anything else. This includes the ability to hold off-shore accounts that allow them to pay almost no taxes, out-sourcing for cheaper labor with minimal or no requirements for health care or benefits, with the ultimate results that most businesses have no interest in investing or contributing to their communities;
2. Large businesses are viewed as inviolate and innocent until proven guilty, while individual citizens are assumed guilty until proven innocent, and their primary function is to produce wealth for transfer into the coffers of said large businesses;
3. A large sector of the American public, and a disproportionate percentage of our elected representatives sneer at education, despise science, and assume that religion and cultural images can and should replace science and math, with the result that science and math are not encouraged in schools, higher education is criticized as "elitist", and the US lags far behind most other developed nations in terms of student performance in these fields. Thus we have Paul Broun (R, GA) who actually sits on the committee for Science, Space and Technology, claiming that evolution, embryology, and the Big Bang Theory (science, not TV) are "lies straight from the pit of hell designed to convince people they do not need a savior". He is perfectly welcome to those beliefs, but NOT to sit on a science committee when he is ignorant of science itself;
4. We value image over truth, and actively ignore any evidence of the latter if it affects the former;
5. We have lost the sense of a unified nation, and prefer our smaller boundaries and limits to an inclusive approach to national problems.
Private Property or public land?
What possesses some of you to think you have the right to dictate what a private property owner can legally do on his own land?
Honsingers could have developed that property 40 years ago, the family sold it to Bicknell so he could utilize it according to the zoning guidelines, but now some feel that "they" should be able to pick the fireweed flowers and enjoy that property for their own enjoyment? YOU should have bought the land then....Bicknell has every right to do whatever he chooses to do with it within the codes and guidelines in place. He sure as heck didn't buy it to donate it to the towns flowerpickers and granolas that detest any and all development.
This towns whiners are just amazing.
