The City and Borough of Juneau Planning Commission Tuesday night approved Secon’s six-year permit to mine gravel from Lemon Creek.
Owners of certain units in the Rivers Edge Condominiums raised concerns that Secon’s gravel extraction on Lemon Creek was a nuisance, shaking and damaging their homes.
Secon said it won’t try to break through winter frost layers deeper than two feet.
Secon received a permit to extract gravel from gravel bars in Lemon Creek during winter and spring months. At total of 35,000 cubic yards can be removed a year up to a total of 240,000 cubic yards.
In other business, Juneau’s Subport is now permitted to act as a staging area for the State Library, Archives and Museum (SLAM) project. The Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit Tuesday that allows “temporary offices, storage connexes material process and miscellaneous equipment storage,” according to a CBJ staff report. The site would also be where contractors unpack and sort construction material before being moved to the museum site.
City staff approved of the four-year permit.
