JSD budget talks with committee selection

The Juneau School District Board of Education has selected the members who will hash out the fiscal year 2014 school budget.

Fiscal year 2014 “promises to be a challenging budget situation,” Sally Saddler said during Tuesday’s meeting.

The committee is set to meet seven times this winter to learn about the school district, review proposals put forth by the Superintendent of schools and hear public testimony before making budget recommendations to the board of education on March 5.

The committee has more than doubled in size for 2014. There are now 17 voting members plus all seven school board members and a student board representative. The committee is made up of 15 community members and school representatives, a JSD teacher and JSD staff.

School board member Barbara Thurston and a not-yet-chosen community member will jointly chair the committee.

The committee’s community members include Brian Holst, William Martin and Myrna Gardner.

The school district will be represented by Michael Heiman and Laura Vivian.

Juneau’s school representatives, selected by site councils, include Stephanie Buss, David D’Amore, Vaughn Hammond, Jen LaRoe, Alexander Kotlarov, Michelle Johnston, Catherine Reardon, Anjela Johnston, Marie Marx, Laurie Berg, Steve Iha and Stephanie Allison.

The school board is scheduled to meet next on Jan. 15. Kristin Bartlett, chief of staff for the Juneau School District, said the Jan. 15 meeting will offer new budget committee members, and the public, background to better understand the district budget process.

At a subsequent meeting, on Jan. 22, the Juneau public is invited to give testimony on the budget.

Juneau School District Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich has met with an administrative team, which includes school principals, to hash out a preliminary budget. Gelbrich is scheduled to release his budget on Jan. 29. The JSD 2014 budget committee will shape the budget from there.

The school board is tasked with submitting a budget to the City and Borough of Juneau for final approval.

The public is invited to make suggestions on the budget. Email budgetsuggestions@juneauschools.org to make suggestions to Juneau School District Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich before he releases his budget.
