Police ID those involved in single vehicle rollover crash

Posted: January 16, 2013 - 7:51pm

The police have identified two men who were involved in a single vehicle rollover crash on Egan Drive on Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Dominic Branson said in a release that 22-year-old Juneau resident Silver Maake was driving the vehicle that crashed and 23-year-old Siaosi Maake was a passenger in the vehicle. Branson said in a phone interview that he believed the two are cousins.

Both were taken to the hospital after being extricated from the vehicle by Capital City Fire/Rescue personnel, according to the release, and police said their injury status was unknown.

Siaosi Maake is currently in the process of being medevaced from Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Wash., confirmed Bartlett Regional Hospital spokesman Jim Strader.

Strader could not say whether Siaosi’s injuries were life-threatening, and a condition status was not provided. It was unknown if the family has been contacted.

Police said they responded to the report of the crash after 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon on Egan Drive near the Glacier Highway intersection by McDonald’s.

An investigation revealed that Silver Maake lost control of the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro, left the roadway and struck a light pole before coming to a stop against a pedestrian bridge alongside Egan Drive, the release states. The vehicle was totalled and towed from the scene.

Speed is a suspected factor in the crash, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

northboy, really you're going to go there

Assuming you are not a native Alaskan or native American, I'm sure the same could have been said about your ancestors. If you are a native, then you're just rude.

If you read my comment to northboy, I wasn't refering to you being or not being a natvie, I was talking to him/her.

Have to say you sure have anger issues. Don't like the comments being made, stop reading them.

I do hope all are well, and I have made no comments regarding the driver being a poor or reckless drive so step off man!

Typicall pigeon dialect to

Typicall pigeon dialect to show solidarity with a culture they are not a part of, but trying desperately to form some sort of identity for themselves. Too sad. People should really strive to be the best "them" that they can be. Trying to be someone else just ends in sadness and pain.

And not really sure what all the drama is about. Unless some comments were deleted. Nothing out of the ordinary here as far as I can tell...

It would just be the driver, correct. I hope for the drivers sake (and the families) that the passenger is ok. Hard lesson to come back from if you're in jail.

Kaseleo, we all (most of us for sure) really hope they are both ok. So, please take the comments for what they are, concern, support, and some upsetness for what looks to be a poor driving choice. We all drive on that road, and poor driver chocies often affect us whether we like it or not.

This isn't the place to be

This isn't the place to be arguing over grammar and petty BS. Regardless of how it happened, no one would want to crash a brand new car, especially with family as a passenger. Lets all hope and pray both of them are okay mentally and physically! Sending many healing thoughts to both of them!

funny you should inquire about my ancestory. I am a homeboy and we eat muktuk to honor my mothers roots fromChukchi/ Barter Is. and lutefisk on my father side at your thanksgiving, then we debate on who was here first. How about you? Mayflower, slave ship or free pass at Ellis lsland?

I retact my statement, we need the O's here to clean toilets, toss baggage, move furnature, act all ganster and live off the welfare our taxes pay toward.

PS. Bro's sorry if it sounded Racist....had to go to work...

NB

Thanks for the inquiry. Not sure what you mean by the term "Os"...

I would say the free pass at Ellis Island (circa 1785). I'm all for saying that certain individuals are a waste of space, or destined to clean toilets, or to live off welfare, but to generalize all individuals of a given ethnicity is narrow minded I assume you don't fully align with all the ill worded generalizations of your identified roots, do you?

That said, decendants of the native peoples of this nation existing today, do, in my mind, hold a special stance on such statements, but only slightly (after all your peoples were here first). Ignorance and racism is still that regardless of you roots, upbringing, color, or social class.

Being born and raised in the midwest (German and Norwegian country of Dutch lineage), I can't say I have ever taken a liking to lutefisk.

Truth be told

Honestly, truth be told, race should have never been brought up in this matter. A person is a person, regardless of where he or she originated from. Everyone has made a mistake at some point in life. These Folks are still in that learning stage, please respect their families and understand that. Pray that it wasn't anyone you were close to that was going through that phase. Yes, I'm educated, with a graduate degree but that doesn't stop racism. As long as there is ignorance in this world, there will always be racism. As an African American, raised in the south, I learned that at a very young age. Yet, I still love life and everything it has to offer. Long story short, it is easy to sit back and criticize someone for making a mistake. We have all been there. Instead of targeting these folks, pray that they will survive, learn from their mistakes and be a pioneer in this community. I'm glad, my father taught me to respect everyone, regardless of their skin color. I love Juneau, I love the people here, but just like any city, there are bad apples that are quick to criticize a certain race when it is convenient. I don't care what they looked like, they made a mistake and I hope they recover fully and learn from it. Lord knows I have made some DUMB mistakes in life, I'm just happy that I turned it around to be able to serve my Country which I would die for with no regret so my kids can enjoy the freedom that I have.
