Surf Scoters feed in Gastineau Channel in front of the Douglas Boat Harbor on Friday.
...as they form a wide circle and tighten it up, herding feed toward the shore like a big seine. Then when they close in the net in the shallower water they go crazy in a feeding frenzy. Then start all over again.
I saw a flock of these seabirds on west Prince of Wales in the seventies that was about five miles long & three miles wide. I wouldn't even begin to know how to estimate their numbers.
The males have very striking black & white colors with an orange bill.
