JPD recommends criminal charges after car crash

Posted: January 22, 2013 - 5:33pm  |  Updated: January 23, 2013 - 1:06am

Police are recommending criminal charges be pressed against a 22-year-old man who crashed his vehicle on Egan Drive last Wednesday.

The Juneau Police Department said they are recommending reckless driving, reckless endangerment and driving without a license charges against Silver Maake. All three of those charges are misdemeanors.

JPD confirmed that charges were pending on their website’s “Ask A Dispatcher” section in response to a Juneau resident who complained that his family and others “could have been killed due to the driver’s negligence.”

JPD spokeswoman Cindee Brown-Mills did not return calls on Tuesday seeking further comment.

District Attorney David Brower told the Empire that his office has not received the file from JPD yet.

The police said in an earlier release that Maake lost control of his 2013 Chevrolet Camaro, and it left the roadway and struck a light pole before coming to a stop against a pedestrian bridge along Egan Drive near the Glacier Highway intersection by McDonald’s.

Both Maake and a passenger — whom police identified as his cousin Siaosi Maake, 23 — were taken to the hospital after the crash.

Siaosi Maake required further medical care and was medevaced to Harborview Medical Center that night, but he has since been released. Harborview spokeswoman Liz Hunter said he was discharged on Sunday.

Police said at the time that speed was a suspected factor in the crash.

What if?

His young daughter had been in the car? He needs to pay for his recklessness!

I was the one that posted the question on the website...I dont feel that I was "complaining".I simply wanted to know if justice would be served..I'm sure a lot of other people were curious too. Glad to hear that both are okay. Now the driver can own up to his carelessness and hopefully realize how BLESSED he is that he didn't hurt any others..I've already said my Thank Yous to my higher power, and I hope he has done the same.

No drivers license either, that says alot.

Thanks for the follow up Juneau Empire. I have to wonder who is the irresponsible registered owner of that high dollar, lousy in AK's. winter cruiser and good luck with the insurance co. lol. Hats off to you Junomom, hopefully Brower doesn't toss the file in his round filing cabinet and prosecutes a no brainer slam dunk case. Lesson learned for more than just the driver, one can only hope.

Job?

What does someone do for a living that they can afford a brand new Camaro even though they didn't have a driver's license? Looks like this situation needs some more scrutiny.

@Lat

You surprise me with the question about his job...what business is it of ours what his job was? He deserved that car, job or not...money or not, common sense or not. My opinion is that its the evil car company that built the car, made it way to fast....might have to ban any cars that go over 35 mph to ensure the roads are safer....limit the engine size to say 70cc's.....we have a major problem on our hands and I blame the car company. It couldn't be the driver....that would mean the driver would have to take responsibility for his actions and we all know that isn't possible in this day and age...gotta be the car company and the oil companies that make the high octane fuel that goes in it....

juss saying....

Was it his car?

Is (was) the car registered in his name? Why is his license suspended? Bad driving record? This guy needs to be taught a lesson, by age 22 one should be wising up, especially if he has a young child. Time to start acting like an adult. No Obama garbage here, its his fault for this accident and no one elses.

People & Cars

Any one can buy an expensive car now day's for $199 a month times how ever many months plus interest to pay it off. The economy crashed 10 years ago but people are still buying what they can not afford.

Good question Snagger. I believe we should have mandatory training before driving any motor vehicle.
Along with licensing the driver and registration of the vehicle. Maybe that will prevent these types of possible tragedies. I’m glad there were no serious injuries. Oh you say this is already in effect? Well we need more laws then.

Young Adult drivers

We have a young man who lives in an apartment complex adjacent to our condo driveway. He drives through our condo property several times a day at a high rate of speed and on snowy days he guns the engine extra hard so that he skids around the corners of our driveway. Not only is he going to hurt someone but he's damaging our property.

You're way off base on that one. Yes - he's young and he was driving too fast. Yes, he will have to pay for that. But, I know this young man, I've spent time with him and I've never met a person who was MORE against drugs and drinking than Silver. Unsubstantiated rumors and accusations are ugly and don't help anyone.

it doesn't matter drugs or not-he needs to make restitution

This dangerous act of complete stupidity cost well over $200k after the bills roll in for the medevac, medical bills, cost of the car, police and tow truck time, etc.

I'm pretty confident he wouldn't be paying for any of this himself but most will come from taxayers through medicaid or the IHS, etc. None of these programs were designed to pay for people's dangerous and illegal acts, nor should they.

Sadly, he probably will walk away crying about how he was a victim.

Really - so how is it that he actually has a job?? And what does it matter if he DOES have a sugar mama? Even though he doesn't - jealous much? What in the world would that have to do with anything? What kind of a person are you to get on a public venue and spread malicious lies and unsubstantiated rumors? You are a disgusting liar. And clearly have your own agenda that has nothing to do with this case. You are not a good person - although I know you think you are.

think what you want

like i said totally fine think what you want and i will do the same. if u actaully knew me u would know that i am in no way jealous of him. thanks for you concern tho. like i said in my comment above. im glad they are both okay. no one in this town would have wanted a different out come. justice will be served and lets hope it doesnt happen again. i have no personal fight with him but he caused a lot of damage that could have for sure been way worse. and i hope he learns from that, but fearful that he wont. keeping my fingers crossed
