The Capital City Fire/Rescue annual awards banquet, which is for fire department members and their families, will be held this Saturday, Jan. 26, at the University of Alaska Southeast cafeteria.
The banquet will begin with a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The awards ceremony is slated to start between 7:15 and 7:30 p.m.
Richard Etheridge, the chief of Capital City Fire/Rescue, will be hosting the awards ceremony, which honors the firefighter and medic of the year, company officer of the year and a special team member of the year from either the Rope Rescue Team, Water Rescue Team or the HAZMAT Team.
This year, Etheridge will also give out a new award called the Chief’s Award of Excellence, which honors someone who has routinely gone above and beyond the call of duty. Some of the firefighters who responded to the Gastineau Apartments fire in November will also be honored.
Tickets are still being sold to department members, and the tickets can be purchased at the Juneau fire station, 820 Glacier Avenue, or at the door.
The banquet was previously funded by grants, but this year the Local International Association of Firefighters Union raised money to pay for half of the expenses, Etheridge said. Ticket sales will cover the other half.
There is not enough seating for the event to be open to the public. Generally, the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly members and the city manager are invited to attend.
