Fighting homelessness with haircuts, housing

Outreach project in Juneau Jan. 28 has many ways to help

Juneau’s homeless are invited to a day of food and services Jan. 28 at the Centennial Hall for the Juneau Homeless Coalition’s annual Project Homeless Connect.

The event drew 187 people in 2012.

Those experiencing homelessness can find assistance with housing applications, identification and receive haircuts or massages. Learn the signs of colon cancer with the educational Nolan the Colon display.

“Project Homeless Connect is a one-day one-stop-shop for those experiencing homelessness,” according to a Coalition release. “It cuts out a lot of wait time, bus time and processing time by having the experts and the clients in one place at one time. “

The event also allows Juneau’s myriad social services to gather information on homelessness in the city. As example, the Veterans Administration uses numbers from Project Homeless Connect to determine how many housing vouchers Juneau will receive.

The Juneau Homeless Coalition is looking for volunteers and donations. The final day to drop donations off at the Juneau Economic Development Council offices on Willoughby is Friday.  Donations can then be dropped off at Centennial Hall Monday morning before the event.

Food and beverages are provided as are childcare support services, counseling services and general information.
