Nude man crosses channel to Douglas after hit-and-run accident

A hit-and-run accident involving a nude pedestrian on Egan Drive near Sunny Point sparked a confusing series of events Thursday night that had police searching for an injured person — and discovering that he had crossed Gastineau Channel to seek help in North Douglas.

A woman called police at 10:30 p.m. to say a nude man was at the doorstep of her North Douglas home, near the waterfront, and he was injured.

Police found tracks leading from the channel and called for an ambulance, saying the 28-year-old man was hypothermic and blacking out. The man suffered apparently non-life-threatening injuries, police said in a prepared release. He was not believed to be intoxicated.

He was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital.

Police found the scene of the accident and determined that the man proceeded through the wetlands and channel after being struck by a vehicle. Police say they gathered “numerous articles of evidence.”

At about 12:30 p.m., according to police scanner traffic, the man’s mother called police to say her son, who suffered from a mental health issue, was missing and the last time she saw him in the Lemon Creek area he was wearing just a bath towel. Police informed her of his whereabouts.

Police are searching for the driver, who fled the scene. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Juneau Police Department at 586-0600.
