Scott Fischer, a volunteer with the Juneau Nordic Ski Club, stands next to the recovered snowmachine at the West Glacier Trailhead on Thursday. Fischer broke through the ice into about two feet of overflow while grooming a skiing track on Wednesday. “I thought I was swimming at first,” said Fischer. Fischer was able to crawl out and get word out about the dangerous ice conditions of Mendenhall Lake. The snowmachine was held up by thicker ice until volunteers could retrieve it on Thursday.

Thanks for getting the word out, Scott.

Why would you want your picture taken?
Hey everybody, in case you didn't know, I'm the _____ that took my 450-lb. snowmachine on to thin ice and broke through it! Yup, I'm the one that made that dumb move!
Glad you're all right, but next time, you could just let the news out that the ice is thin, and how you know, but hold back your name (and especially your picture).
Probably not the kind of attention you want.

John Ingalls
I think John Ingalls has broken through ice on every lake in Juneau and he has no problem with word getting out. One time John was on Twin Lakes skating and the cops were using a bull horn to tell him to get off and as he was waving them off he fell through. Another time we were passing a puck back an forth on Mendenhall Lake and John just disappeared but then surfaced though the hole he fell through when the ice gave away. Many other stories like that out there.
